Volunteering
Volunteering and community involvement are at the core of Active Lives Canada’s mission. We believe that meaningful participation in the community helps individuals with neurodiversity build confidence, develop life skills, and feel a true sense of belonging. Through volunteer opportunities, participants are able to step into real-world environments where they can contribute, connect with others, and experience the pride that comes from giving back. These experiences help foster purpose, independence, and a stronger understanding of what it means to be an active member of the community.
Our programs regularly partner with local organizations such as the ReUse Store, Salvation Army, and other community spaces where participants can support important initiatives while learning valuable job and social skills. Whether it is sorting donations, helping with community tasks, or engaging with staff and customers, these volunteer roles provide structure and routine while encouraging communication, teamwork, and responsibility. Each outing becomes an opportunity for growth, helping participants practice skills in a supportive and encouraging setting.
In addition to ongoing volunteer placements, Active Lives also helps organize and participate in community events that bring people together. From hosting barbeques with partners like Meridian Bank to running community car washes at locations such as No Frills in Shelburne, these events create joyful, inclusive moments where participants can shine. Most importantly, volunteering allows individuals to see that their contributions matter, strengthening their connection to the world around them and reinforcing the belief that everyone has something meaningful to offer.
