Communication

At Active Lives Canada, communication is at the heart of everything we do. We understand that every individual expresses themselves in different ways, and our programs are built to support and strengthen communication for each participant in the way that works best for them. Whether someone communicates verbally, through gestures, visuals, or alternative methods, our team is committed to creating a safe, respectful environment where every voice is heard and valued.

We use a wide range of communication approaches within our day and respite programs, including augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), sign language supports, visual schedules, and structured communication tools tailored to individual needs. For the right participants, these systems provide a powerful way to express wants, needs, emotions, choices, and ideas. Staff work closely with families and professionals to ensure communication strategies are consistent, meaningful, and empowering, helping participants feel more confident and connected throughout their day.

Most importantly, our goal is not just to support communication but to foster growth, independence, and relationships. By building communication skills in everyday routines, social activities, and learning opportunities, participants develop stronger self-advocacy, deeper friendships, and a greater sense of belonging. At Active Lives, we celebrate all forms of communication and work together to help every individual thrive.

At Active Lives Canada, technology is more than a tool; it is a pathway to confidence, independence, and connection. Our day program embraces the digital world in a supportive and engaging way, giving participants opportunities to explore technology at their own pace. Whether it’s learning new skills, building communication, or discovering creative interests, our tech programming helps participants feel capable in a world that is increasingly driven by innovation.

Across our campuses, participants engage with computers, tablets, and interactive learning platforms that make technology exciting and accessible. We introduce skills like basic computer literacy, typing, digital creativity, and structured activities that build focus and problem-solving. For many individuals, technology becomes a powerful way to express themselves, stay connected, and take pride in mastering something meaningful.

We are also proud to offer introductory computer coding experiences, helping participants explore logic, sequencing, and the building blocks of programming in a fun and approachable way. Coding encourages critical thinking and perseverance, and it opens doors to new possibilities that many families never imagined. At Active Lives Canada, technology is not just about screens; it is about unlocking potential, creating opportunity, and empowering participants to thrive in the modern world.
